The mask should be used in any medical and care setting to prevent infection and the spread of disease between healthy and sick people, while still allowing clear communication between them.

HMPro™ is a transparent and filtering film solution developed by HMCare. An international trademark application for HMPro™ has been filed.
To protect its innovations and brand identity, HMCare has also filed, either in its own name or on behalf of its partners, various intellectual property rights, including trademarks, patents, and industrial designs covering different regions of the world, including Europe, the Americas and Asia.

A bit more than two years of joint research at Empa and EPFL were necessary to reconcile transparency, durability and porosity in particular. The result of this research is a membrane made of a polymer specially developed for this application.

A few years ago…

Not really. The concept of a transparent medical mask has existed for decades. During the research and development phase of HMCARE’s innovative material – HMPRO, we came across several earlier attempts and prototypes of transparent masks, some of which date back to the early 20th century (see images below).

However, none of those early designs succeeded in combining transparency, breathability, comfort, and medical protection. The materials available at the time simply did not allow for a safe and functional product.

What makes the new generation of masks developed by HMCARE unique is the use of a new polymer technology that enables the production of a fully transparent, breathable, and protective medical mask. This innovation bridges a century-long gap between concept and practical realization — turning an old idea into a modern, reliable medical device.
